NSFAS has rejected 243 113 applications and 15 174 appeals have been lodged.
NSFAS Acting Chairperson Professor Lourens Van Staden briefed the media on Monday about the registration procedure and allowance payment.
He stated that as of February 16, 2024, 1,936 330 applications were received, 1,244 854 are temporarily funded as of March 1, 2024, with 108 345 registrations received, 59 723 awaiting evaluations, and 94 816 awaiting supporting documentation.

He also stated that NSFAS funding has increased from R21.4 million to nearly R50 billion since 1991, enabling children from working-class and impoverished families to pursue higher education at public universities and technical and vocational schools.
The government is taking a bold stand by providing more access to post-secondary education and training for those members of our community who previously lacked it.

According to Van Staden, students have withdrawn a total of 84,225 applications; 52,038, however, are still pending, and 136,468 are in the not-started status because the applicants merely created profiles rather than submitting applications.
