Advocate Rodney de Kock, the Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, has passed away after he lost his fight with cancer.
According to a statement from his family, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in early December, which caused his health to rapidly deteriorate.
On Monday, he passed away from the cancer in Johannesburg’s Morningside Mediclinic, surrounded by his loved ones.
He had a “distinguished career in private practice, the training and mentoring of young legal practitioners, and in the management of the prosecutorial services in the country,” his family said.
After serving as the Western Cape’s attorney general from 1999 until joining the NPA in November 2003 as the Western Cape’s director of public prosecutions, De Kock became the nation’s first black attorney general.
“The NPA leadership, NPA staff and colleagues in the criminal justice system will miss his passion for justice and the rule of law in this country. DK, as we fondly called him, was a pillar of strength in the NPA. Amongst many other things, he led the law enforcement agencies on the FATF, focusing our collective efforts and commitment to get the country to exit grey listing and dedicated his last months to this work” read a statement released by the NPA
A representative for Adv. De Kock’s family will provide information about the memorial service and funeral plans in due course.
