North-West University (NWU) confirmed that a male student was found dead in his room on Sunday, 12 June.
Onkgopotse Kgeletsane, was found laying on his bed in a campus residence by a friend.
The initial inquest docket was changed to murder after preliminary post-mortem results revealed Kgeletsane sustained head and multiple body injuries.
In a statement NWU said the campus community is deeply saddened by the second-year Public Administration student’s death.
“The university will continue to cooperate and provide all the necessary support to the South African Police Services’ investigation team to ensure a thorough investigation of the matter. We are aware of the reports and speculations regarding the cause(es) of Onkgopotse’s death, and we caution everyone to allow the SAPS to conclude the investigations and report accordingly.
Since the incident, the NWU Student Counselling team has been providing the necessary support to fellow students and residents of the residence. We have also been in contact with the family, and we will support them in any way possible.”
The student was last seen by friends on Friday, 10 June. His parents grew concerned after they failed to reach him on his cellphone on Saturday and Sunday morning.
It was then that campus security opened the student’s room and the student was found unresponsive on his bed.
