Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected calls for a ceasefire as the Gaza death toll soars to over 10 000, with more than 4 000 of those being children.
In an exclusive interview ABC World News’ David Muir, Netanyahu said a ceasefire would hamper Israel’s efforts to rescue hostages from Hamas.
Despite the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling for an immediate ceasefire because Gaza is becoming a “graveyard for children”, Netanyahu has vowed to continue the war.
When asked what Israel is doing to minimize the risk of civilian casualties, Netanyahu said Hamas is to blame for the deaths of Palestinian civilians as the militant group is using children and women as human shields.
The conflict between Israel and Gaza has been ongoing for the past 33-days, with the death toll climbing daily.
While the Health Ministry run by Hamas, reports that over 10 300 Palestinian civilians have lost their lives, which includes 4 100 children, Netanyahu says these numbers need to be verified, as he estimates it to be far lower.
“We’re fighting an enemy that is particularly brutal, they’re using their civilians as human shields. We’re asking the Palestinian civilian population to leave the warzone and move south, but Hamas is preventing themat gunpoint. They’re using them as human shields.”
However, the Israel Defence Force (IDF) have carried out strikes in the south of Gaza as well.
