The National trucking shutdown which was planned by several trucking associations for Monday, 20 May has been suspended.
This after a virtual meeting was held on Sunday, 19 May during which an implementation plan was agreed upon.
All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF-ASA) announcd the temporary suspension of the trucking shutdown which threatened to shutdown various national and regional routes.
General Gugu Sokhela, ATDF-ASA Secretary General shared the decision to suspend the trucking shutdown.
“On behalf of the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africans, we would like to inform you that our planned national shutdown is temporarily suspended. We will closely monitor the implementation plan agreed upon in our visual meeting on 19 May 2024 around 14h00.
The ATDF-ASA leadership urged all members are to refrain from any illegal actions and expressed hope that government departments would uphold their commitment to intensify inspections and enforcement of compliance regulations.
We urge all our members to distance themselves from any form of illegal action. We hope government departments will do as agreed, intensifying inspection and enforcement in terms of compliance. We shall stand together and united.”
The announcement brings relief to many who were concerned about potential disruptions on major transport routes across the country.”
Law enforcement agencies had been on high alert to prevent any lawlessness during the shutdown.
