Two more laboratory-confirmed illnesses have been found in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, prompting the Department of Health to urge continued public vigilance against the mpox virus.
The agency reports that 26 days have passed since South Africa’s last known cases of mpox were recorded. With 12 cases reported in Gauteng, 11 in KwaZulu-Natal, and 1 in the Western Cape, the total number of cases to date is therefore 24.
Three deaths have been connected to the illness thus far. with the Gauteng case involves a 20-year-old man seen at a private health facility in Johannesburg on Friday, 2 August.
Data indicates that the most recent case is a 36-year-old male from KwaZulu-Natal who was brought to a nearby public health institution in Durban around the end of July when he developed a rash resembling the Mpox.
“The patient has no international travel history,”
“The case presented with typical Mpox lesions. He confirmed his international travel history to Peru in South America. It is uncertain if the exposure occurred in Peru or South Africa.”
“All people with suspected symptoms are reminded to visit the nearest healthcare facility right away for clinical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment options, instead of self-diagnosing and isolation.” said the Department of Health
