More than 8kg of the date rape drug was discovered and seized at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) on Monday, 20 November.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) confirmed the drugs were concealed in a fish consignment at the cargo terminal.
Rohypnol is classified as a Schedule 6 drug in South Africa.
8.1kg of Rohypnol was discovered hidden in a consignment of dried fish.
A joint operation by BMA, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs, and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAPHRA) uncovered the consignment which arrived from the Republic of Nigeria.
The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato has commended the dynamic operation of the BMA environmental health officials who made the major drug discovery.
A case is being registered with the SAPS.
The Border Management Authority is committed to maintaining border law enforcement with strict control measures in place to detect and prevent illegal activities.
