Gauteng police have intensified efforts to clamp down on crime, making more than 2000 arrests over the long weekend.
Arrests were made across the province for various offences which included, domestic violence, possession of firearms, stolen property, driving under the influence and murder.
In addition to multiple operations which were jointly conducted by Metro Police, Traffic Department, Department of Home Affairs, Private Security and Community Policing Forums, increased police visibility was recorded over the weekend.
The operations included tracing of wanted suspects, roadblocks, stop and searches, compliance at liquor outlets, and second-hand dealerships.
Police also seized drugs, weapons, firearms, alcohol, stolen copper and ammunition.
A total of 935 suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni for crimes that included hijackings, murder, drug dealings, possession of firearms and business robbery.
Arrests were made after extensive tracing efforts which led police to the arrests of 250 suspects in Tshwane.
Of these arrests, 96 were suspects who committed gender-based violence related crimes.
In total approximately 2000 arrests were made, with the Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General, Girly Mbele expressing gratitude to law enforcement officials for their continuous hard work.
“Some of the arrests will not have been possible if community members did not come forth with information and also reported those criminal activities. Let us continue working together in the fight against crime,” said Maj Gen Mbele.
