Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for approximately 30 suspects who carried out a brazen attack on a shopping mall in Hammanskraal during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The incident, during which five ATMs and a drop safe were bombed, involved a violent shootout, leaving one security guard wounded.
According to police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo, the attack began when a security guard conducting routine patrols outside the mall was accosted by the large group of armed men.
The suspects then proceeded to bomb five ATMs and a drop safe inside a shop within the mall. As they attempted to flee the scene, they encountered police and private security officers, sparking a fierce gun battle.
“The suspects robbed him of his firearm and proceeded to enter the shopping mall, where they then robbed a second security officer of his cellphone.
“A shoot-out ensued between the police, private security officers and the suspects. One of the security officers was shot and wounded and was subsequently taken to a medical care centre for treatment,” said Masondo.
Police have opened cases of attempted murder and ATM bombings and are actively investigating the incident. Despite the intense exchange of gunfire, no arrests have been made at this time, and the suspects remain at large.
