The loss of five additional generating units have pushed loadshedding to Stage 4. This was announced by Eskom early on Thursday morning, 22 February.
Eskom has been fluctuating the Stages of loadshedding from the start of the year, and earlier this month loadshedding was ramped up to Stage 5.
It’s unknown currently how long Stage 4 will be in effect but Eskom says an update will be communicated should the situation change.
“Due to the loss of five generating units at Kendal Power Station and a generating unit at Duvha Power Station, Stage 4 loadshedding will be implemented at 04:00 today until further notice.
Eskom will closely monitor the power system and communicate should any significant changes occur.
The higher stages of loadshedding comes despite Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa sharing that “the power situation will stabilize by 14 February.”
Briefing media earlier this month on the implementation of the Energy Action Plan, Ramokgopa assured South Africans that the situation was under control and said the utility will not compromise on planned maintenance because of long-term benefits.
