- Limpopo has launched its first PET/CT scanner and Linear Accelerator (LINAC) at Pietersburg Hospital in Polokwane.
- The new equipment will allow healthcare workers to detect cancers earlier and deliver highly precise radiation therapy.
- By offering these advanced oncology services locally, the province will significantly reduce patient travel times, waiting lists, and treatment delays.
Limpopo has taken a major step forward in oncology services with the official launch of the province’s first Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanner and Linear Accelerator (LINAC) at Polokwane’s Pietersburg Hospital.
The arrival of this advanced equipment marks a crucial milestone in strengthening regional cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Previously, patients in Limpopo had to travel to other provinces to access these specialised services.
The new machinery will keep care close to home, cutting down waiting times, reducing travel costs, and ultimately improving patient outcomes.
Highlighting the clinical impact of the new technology, Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego said the equipment will allow clinicians to detect cancer earlier, monitor how well patients respond to therapies, and target tumours with high precision.
“The advanced technology will enable earlier and more accurate cancer detection, monitor patients’ response to treatment, and provide precise radiation therapy while limiting damage to healthy tissue.”
