South Africa’s unemployment rate has decreased slightly by 0.2 of a percentage point to 32.7% in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2022.
Compared to Q3:2022 which noted an unemployment rate of 32.9%.
This equates to approximately 28 000 people who were unemployed in Q3:2022.
According to the latest unemployment statistics which were released by Stats SA on Tuesday, 28 February, 7.8 million people were without work, looking for work and were available to work in the last quarter of 2022.
Of this, 6.1 million people were unemployed on a long-term basis and 1.7 million were unemployed short-term.
Women were still the most vulnerable on the labor front compared to men. More women were likely to remain unemployed than men, with 80.6% of women being unemployed compared to 76.1% of men.
However, men recorded the highest increase in the incidence of long-term unemployment, the incidence among women was higher in 2012 and 2022.
Stats SA pointed out that the level of education played a role in the employability of unemployed people in the labor market.
People with the highest level of education are less likely to be affected by high levels of unemployment.
