The South African Police Services (SAPS) confirmed that nine suspects were killed in a shootout with police in Mariannhill, KwaZulu-Natal.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, 03 April members of the KZN Provincial Stabilization Team moved in on a group of 11 suspects who were allegedly terrorizing the community of Mariannhill and surrounding areas.
Suspects are believed to be involved in a case of rape in which a young girl was allegedly gang raped in front of her mother during a house robbery.
Police say the group of suspects were on their radar for serious and violent crimes in the area, and were reportedly planning to execute a hit on someone.
“Four firearms, one of them a rifle have so far been found in possession of the suspects and a search is still ongoing. A manhunt for two more suspects is underway after they fled.
Although police were ambushed when they erroneously knocked at the wrong house, the tactically astute officers managed to retaliate and neutralize the threat with none of them suffering any injuries.”
