King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and Nomzamo Myeni attended the commemoration event of the 146th anniversary of the Battle of Isandlwana together in Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.
This marked the couple’s first public appearance since it was reported that Misuzulu had called off his upcoming wedding to his third wife-to-be Myeni.
Misuzulu was alleged to have also stripped Myeni of all benefits including her security detail.
This was after his spokesperson announced that he will formally marry Myeni in a traditional Shembe Church wedding ceremony (Umgcagco) on Sunday, 26 January.
It is unclear whether the wedding will still continue.
On Monday, 20 January the Pietermaritzburg High Court dismissed an urgent application by Misuzulu’s first wife, queen Ntokozo kaMayisela Zulu, to stop her husband from marrying Myeni.
Mayisela argued that it is unlawful for the king to marry another woman while he is in a civil union with her.
“I humbly submit that the responded herein cannot enter into (a) a civil marriage and (b) a customary marriage whilst our civil marriage still subsists,” Mayisela said in the application.
Misuzulu filed for a divorce from Mayisela at the Pietermaritzburg High Court in January.
In the court papers, the king cited the breakdown of their marriage as the reason and offered maintenance of R20 000 a month for a year after the divorce is finalised.
This is allegedly the first time in history that a Zulu king has divorced a wife.
King Misuzulu is also married to his second wife Queen Nozizwe Mulela kaMakhubu who hails from the Kingdom of eSwatini.
