Three suspects have been arrested for the kidnapping of Vereeniging businessman, Zaheer Asmal.
Asmal was kidnapped last Friday outside his business, Fred’s Hardware in De Deur.
The businessman was found in a house that police and private security raided in Lenasia South at midnight.
Following a lead, the National Crime Intelligence Anti-Kidnapping Task Team made the breakthrough in less than five days after Asmal was kidnapped.
The team swooped in at three identified addresses, one in Lenasia South where the victim was found unharmed.
A 70-year old Mozambican national was arrested at this address. The man was the owner of the property.
At the second address in Ennerdale, police found the Toyota Hilux and fake number plates which were used in Asmal’s kidnapping. Another suspect, a Malawian national was arrested, in Ennerdale.
This led police to a house in Roodepoort where a third suspect was arrested.
When police arrived at the house in Roodepoort, they were met with gunfire. Fortunately none of the Task Team members sustained any injuries. One suspect, a South African national was arrested. One unlicensed firearm was also seized.
Over the past week, the Task Team has arrested eight suspects linked to kidnappings where ransom demands were made.
All three suspects are facing charges relating to kidnapping and robbery with aggravated circumstances.
The Vereeniging businessman has not made a statement regarding the circumstances of his kidnapping. He has returned to his family and is said to be receiving counselling.
