An undocumented foreign national has been arrested in Pretoria after years of working for the City of Tshwane under a stolen identity.
The man, whose real name is allegedly Prince, had been employed at the Tshwane Rietvlei Water Treatment Plant while using the identity of Mohlaume Geoffrey Mamabolo.
His arrest followed a request from the Office of the Chief Operations Officer (COO) to investigate suspicions of identity fraud involving Prince.
Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba confirmed that the man’s fingerprints did not match records in the Department of Home Affairs database, sparking concerns that he was a foreign national.
Home Affairs later verified that the real Mr Mamabolo’s ID was issued in 2013, and that the identity number in question had already been blocked after “Prince” attempted to apply for a smart ID card.
“When questioned, he failed to provide a valid explanation for the discrepancy, could not recall details of his upbringing or schooling, and ultimately admitted that he was not Mr Mamabolo,” Bokaba said.
“He further revealed that the fraudulent ID was given to him years ago by an individual in Polokwane.”
It also emerged that Prince had no fixed address and had been living on municipal property since his employment.
He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 August 2025.
