A Tshwane couple have been charged with murder after faking the husband’s death and cashing in on his insurance policy worth millions.
The husband and wife duo, Vincent Sibusiso Mahlangu and Lerato Mahlangu have been described as “Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha 2.0″.
This due to the couple’s brazen attempt to fake Vincent’s death in a house fire in Soshanguve in 2022.
The couple stand accused of the murder of Lerato’s ex-lover and father of her daughter, Sibusiso Sithebe, who’s burnt remains were believed to be found inside their RDP home.
Appearing at the Soshanguve Magistrates Court on Thursday, 04 May, the couple are facing charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice and making a false claim on insurance policies.
The case was postponed after the couple’s lawyer stated she would no longer be representing them.
Fortunately, the couple’s elaborate plan to live large came crashing down after Vincent was arrested in Hammanskraal on 16 April, driving a stolen VW.
According to News24, Vincent refused to take fingerprints upon his arrest, telling police the system will reveal that he’s a dead man.
This is how details about their gruesome crime came to light.
Pain and suffering
The distraught family of the deceased Sibusiso, who reported him missing last year, say they want justice for his murder.
Sibusiso’s partner, Lerato Mphefo, whom he had two children with prior to his murder, says she cannot understand how his ex could plan something so heinous.
DNA tests on the deceased’s body have not taken place yet, but the State is in the process of exhuming the body that was passed off as being Vincent’s.
The case has been postponed to 18 May.
