Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi has received several death threats, allegedly by a paid assassin who was contracted to kill him.
Motsoaledi has handed the matter over to the Hawks for investigation, and says the motive for his death threats are unknown.
In an interview with eNCA, Motsoaledi shared that he has received several phone calls from a man who reportedly paid to kill him.
The alleged hitman tried to extort money from Motsoaledi by attempting to negotiate he pays a higher price in exchange for his life.
“I’m looking at this matter seriously, that’s why I immediately handed the matter over to the Hawks.
An individual has recently been phoning me 6 to 8 times a day, telling me that he has been paid to assassinate me.
He told me that if I pay him more, he will go and kill the people who sent him to kill me. So, it became a bidding process.
This person didn’t give me a motive but the matter is being investigated, and I can’t divulge more information.”
In 2023, Motsoaledi granted Lesotho and Zimbabwe nationals a two-year exemption permit.
Lesotho nationals’ permits were set to expire on December 31, 2023, but Zimbabwean exemption permits had two different expiration dates—December 31, 2023, and June 28, 2024—as determined by the courts.
A total of 178,000 Zimbabwe citizens and 54,653 citizens of Lesotho were granted the exemption permit extension, which will mean they are able to stay in South Africa until the end of 2025.
