Harry Potter actor Sir Michael Gambon died at the age of 82 surrounded by family after a battle with pneumonia. His family issued a statement confirming his peaceful passing and requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Gambon’s career on stage and the screen spanned over six remarkable decades.
Born on October 19, 1940, in Dublin, Ireland, Gambon began his career in 1960, making his debut in a production of Shakespeare’s “Othello.”
His talent and dedication to his craft earned him numerous accolades, including three Olivier Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four BAFTA Awards. In 1999, he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of drama.
Many will remember him most fondly for his role as Albus Dumbledore, the beloved headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He took up the role in the Harry Potter film series from 2004 to 2011, following the passing of Richard Harris, who originated the character.
I was very young when the first 2 Harry Potter films were released so more or less grew up with Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. I watch all the HP films at least once a year & now, they’ll feel so different 💔 pic.twitter.com/5dEVexjV1P
