A Grade 6 learner was stabbed to death by his fellow classmate, outside their school in the Free State.
The boys from Zama Primary School in Zastron were involved in an altercation about 600 meters from the school at around 14h30 on Wednesday, 4 May.
According to reports, bullying seemed to have been the reason for their altercation. The learner who was stabbed was the victim of bullying and the suspect had previously tried to stab him with a spoon.
Intervening in their initial squabble, the principal ordered the suspect to go home and fetch his parents.
However, the boy returned to school with a knife and proceeded to stab his Grade 6 classmate.
The boy was stabbed in his chest and was taken to hospital by a teacher but succumbed to his injuries en-route.
His killer fled the scene but was handed over to police by community members.
Free State education departmental spokesperson Howard Ndaba said learners, teachers and the victim’s parents will receive counselling.
An investigation into the incident is underway and the Free State Education Department has condemned the violent behaviour.
