The South African Tourism sector has confirmed that a German tourist has been shot and killed in Mpumalanga.
A group of four tourists were making their way to a lodge inside the Kruger National Park when they were stopped and attacked by three armed men.
One of the tourists was shot in the upper body through the driver’s side window. The German tourist unfortunately died on the scene and the suspects fled in their vehicle.
Nothing was taken from the tourists and this incident further highlights the rise in violent crimes in South Africa.
In a statement, the Department of Tourism expressed it’s devastation at the news of the fatal shooting.
“As a sector, we would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the tourist who was killed in this incident. We call on law enforcement agencies to find the perpetrators of this violent crime as soon as possible.
South Africa receives a large number of tourists from Germany and this is one of the ways in which our tourism sector has been able to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a sector, we are aware that crime tops the list of factors that tourists have raised as a concern when choosing SA as a destination.”
