Gender-based violence and common assault have pushed Gauteng’s crime statistics for the 3rd quarter up by 7.1%.
This according to Gauteng Police Commissioner, Elias Mawela who delivered the latest crime stats for the province on Tuesday, 14 March.
The third quarter stats as reflected under the 17 Community Reported Serious Crimes category meant Gauteng contributed to 27.1% of the country’s overall crime for the period October to December 2022.

“We have two major contributors to our overall 17 Community Reported Serious Crimes that will be the category of contact crimes at 50 039 and other serious crimes at 33 088.
We have been appealing to the public to find ways other than violence to resolve conflicts. We have previously highlighted that assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (GBH) and common assault are the main contributors to our overall figure of contact crimes.”

For the period under review, these two crimes alone contributed over 50% as they have recorded 25 642 counts, out of 50 039 total counts in contact crimes category.
Assault GBH has increased by 4.5% with 487 more counts than the previous period, and common assault has increased by 9.4% with with 1 238 more counts.
Areas with an increase in murder include:
- JHB Central
- Kagiso
- Ivory Park
- Hillbrow
- Tembisa
- Jeppe
Attempted murders were also prevalent in:
- Tembisa
- Jeppe
- Alexandra
- Lenasia
Ivory Park, Tembisa, Temba, Tsakane, Alexandra and Randfontein were also at the top of the list of areas in Gauteng with a high number of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
