Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) confirms that four South Africans are missing after going for a hike in Fish River Canyon.
Amongst the missing are husband and wife, Trevor and Samantha Burger from Franschhoek, Western Cape.
The 63 and 50-year olds respectively were in a group of 10 tourists who were reported missing during a 5-day hike.
Six of the missing ten tourists successfully made it out by completely the hike but rescue teams are still searching for four adults.
The Fish River Canyon trek is the largest canyon in Africa, and is the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia.
It features a gigantic ravine, in total about 160 kilometres long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep.
The Burger’s daughter said the last time she heard from her parents was on Thursday night, 5 May.
They were supposed to check in with their family every night but when there was no call on Friday, the NWR were alerted.
Tana Lancaster, the Burger’s daughter said her parents were fit and healthy and had taken on the Fish River Canyon hike previously and completed it.
The hikers sent out a distress call when they reached the first campsite, however, they were nowhere to be found when the rescue team arrived at the location.
A search team consisting of the NWR and the Ministry of Environment, Tourism, and Forestry officials has been dispatched to the canyon.
