SA records the first cholera death as more cases are being detected.
As the number of laboratory-confirmed cases rises to five, Minister of Health, Dr. Joe Phaahla, revealed on Thursday that the first death related to recent cholera cases in the country had been identified.
This follows the department’s early-month announcement of three instances.
The deceased was the fifth case in the country, according to the department.

He has been recognized as a 24-year-old man who does not have any prior travel experience and lives in Emandleni Wattville, Ekurhuleni.
“The patient presented with profuse watery diarrhoea and was admitted at Tambo Memorial Hospital. His results confirmed positive status and sadly, he passed away a few days later,” Phaahla said.
The general public is urged to practice good hand hygiene to stop transmission. Diarrhoea, dehydration, vomiting, and generalized fatigue are some symptoms.
“All people who experience cholera-like symptoms, with or without local or international travel history, are encouraged immediately visit their nearest health facility for screening and testing to ensure early detection and successful treatment, if test positive.” said Phaahla.
