The father who allegedly poisoned his sons has been charged for 3 counts of murder and one for attempted murder.
Three of his sons died, after the father reportedly gave them an energy drink before school. A fourth brother remains in hospital, whilst the fifth son did not consume the energy drink.
Two brothers died in school on Friday after experiencing stomach pains, while the third died en-route to the nearest hospital.
According to reports, the man waited for the boys’ mother to leave for work before handing his sons the drink.
It is believed he used rat poison to lace the drinks, offering it to his sons while they were getting ready for school.
The father has reportedly apologised for his actions, saying he didn’t know what he was doing.
On Friday, after learning that 3 of his sons had died as a result, the father attempted to take his own life.
He was found unresponsive at his home, having overdosed on pills and was taken to hospital where he remains monitored under police guard.
The three children who died were 16-year old Lehlogonolo Khoabane, Katleho Khoabane, 13, and Tebogo Ngcongwane, who was 6-years old.
In a statement by the family, the mother claims there were no issues the morning her husband gave the boys the energy drink.
“There was no fight, we asked his wife, and she said she doesn’t know why he did that. The only person who knows, is him. We need him to tell us why he did this.”
The boys attended Ratanda Primary and Khanya Lesedi Secondary schools in Ratanda.
