A family from Springs, east of Johannesburg is pleading for help after a “freak accident” left their son unresponsive at daycare.
5-year old Marno Muller is currently fighting for his life at Garden City Hospital. The toddler was found hanging from a slide at his daycare on Thursday, 26 May. His distraught family do not have a medical aid or hospital plan.
An estimated quote from the hospital to keep Marno on critical equipment is at a staggering R350 000. The first three days are crucial to Marno’s survival as there is no indication how long his oxygen supply was cut off.
According to his family, a specialist confirmed that Marno does have some brain damage but it’s too soon to tell how severe it is.
“Marno started convulsing at the hospital and the specialist confirmed that’s a sign of brain damage. We don’t know how long he went without oxygen before he was resuscitated.”

If there are no major complications, doctors are going to try to wake him up on Saturday, 28 May.
A teacher at the daycare told Marno’s parents that the strings of his hoodie caught in the slide as he was sliding down.
Marno got stuck and started suffocating halfway down the slide. At first the teacher thought he was just playing because she could still see his feet move.
But the boy was already blue in the face and found unresponsive at daycare, before he was rushed to hospital.
While the family is taking up the incident with the daycare further, their focus right now is on ensuring their child has a fighting chance.
