Family suspects husband after 23-year-old woman is shot dead on her way to work

  • A 23-year-old woman has been fatally shot in Tembisa while reportedly making her way to work.
  • Her family suspects her husband may be involved in her killing and says they are working with police to locate him.
  • The latest murder brings the number of women found dead in Ekurhuleni over the past two months to 12.

The family of a 23-year-old woman who was fatally shot in Tembisa on Monday morning, 28 September 2026, says they suspect her husband may be involved in her murder.

The family told Kaya News that the deceased and her husband had reportedly had an argument in recent days. According to the family, the husband has since packed his belongings and left his home, which is also in Tembisa.

The 23-year-old, who has since been identified, was shot and killed while reportedly making her way to work. Some of her belongings were also taken.

The family is now engaging with police as they try to locate the woman’s husband.

The woman’s uncle, Motlatsi Khoza, says they last spoke to her husband earlier on Monday morning, but he is now nowhere to be found.

“We went to his place with the police and managed to get access and he was nowhere to be found. We also did not find his belongings, we only found the lady’s belongings,” he told Kaya News.

The motive for the killing is not yet known. Police had initially been investigating the possibility of a robbery after discovering that some of the woman’s belongings had been taken.

Investigators are now working to establish what led to the shooting.

The latest killing has also brought renewed attention to the scourge of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa.

The murder of the 23-year-old brings the number of women killed in Ekurhuleni and found dead over the past two months to 12, sending another wave of fear through the community.

Police investigations are continuing.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose.
