Social media users were locked out of their Facebook and Instagram accounts on Tuesday, 05 March due to a worldwide outage affecting both apps.
Millions of Facebook and Instagram users reported being unable to access their accounts, with many fearing their accounts were being hacked into.
While WhatsApp services have not been affected in South Africa, some users from other parts of the world report a delay in messages and slow updates on the instant messaging app.
DownDetector which monitors online outages confirmed that millions of users have been impacted by Meta’s worldwide outage.
The outage hit South Africans at approximately 17h40 on Tuesday.
There has been no communication from Facebook or Instagram regarding the outage.
This isn’t the first time Facebook and Instagram have experienced worldwide outages, as the first time Mark Zuckerberg’s company was affected by a global crash was in October 2021.
Back then, WhatsApp also crashed and Zuckerberg was forced to use Twitter to update Facebook and Instagram users about the outage.
This is a developing story.
