A late night explosion at a Durban substation has left half the coastal city in the dark, with power only expected to be restored within 48-hours.
The explosion occurred at the 275kv Klaarwater major substation, causing widespread power outages to northern, western and southern KZN regions.
This accounts for about 50% of the city still left in the dark, but teams are said to be working around the clock to restore supply.
The eThekwini Municipality started restoring power area by area on Tuesday night, shortly after the explosion took place.
Strong winds and lightning is believed to be the cause of the explosion but teams are still investigating.
While power has been restored to a number of areas, the municipality calls for patience while they assess the areas still affected.
“Our teams are working around the clock to restore supply as quickly as possible, but at this juncture, we cannot provide specifics until we have completed our inspections, which cover an extensive area of overhead HV lines from Klaarwater area as far as Waterfall in the outerwest.”
