Eskom has asked South Africans to cut back on their energy consumption because the electricity system is severely stretched as a result of the delay in getting units back into service and the loss of several generation units on Monday.
The power utility warned that any future losses of generation capacity would result in load shedding on very short notice.
Following several outages over the weekend, as well as delays in bringing certain generation units to service, Eskom said the power system was “extremely limited” on Monday afternoon.
“Eskom would again like to remind the public that load shedding is implemented only as a last resort to protect the national grid. We, therefore, request the public to continue using electricity sparingly to reduce the occurrence of load shedding,” read their statement.
Eskom is aiming to restore service to a generation unit at each of the Matimba, Duvha, and Arnot power facilities by Monday’s evening peak.
