An Eldorado Park police officer, Sergeant Mandla Buthelezi, was rearrested on Thursday, 11 September 2025, in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, Gauteng Crime Warden Chesnay Kepler.
Buthelezi, who had been out on bail, was detained at the Johannesburg High Court after allegedly violating his bail conditions.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that the arrest took place during a court appearance for the pre-trial proceedings in Kepler’s murder case. The tragic death of Kepler in December 2024 sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.
According to IPID, the sergeant is accused of intimidating witnesses in the ongoing investigation, a direct breach of the conditions of his release. This alleged violation led investigators to seek his immediate detention.
The case has been postponed to 11 October 2025. Buthelezi will remain in custody at the Moroka Police Station until his next court date. The investigation into the murder and the alleged bail violation is ongoing.
