The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have rejected President Cyril Ramaphosa’s “opportunistic” announcement of a holiday within a holiday.
This after Ramaphosa declared 15 December 2023 a public holiday following the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup win.
Ramaphosa, who addressed the nation on Monday night, 30 October, said the public holiday would be a day of hope, a day of celebration, and unity.
However, the EFF say the President has backtracked on his initial promise to South Africans of a public holiday immediately after the Boks’ won.
In a statement the EFF said the date the President declared the public holiday on is a deceitful attempt because the 15 December already falls within a holiday period.
“In a typical ANC fashion, Cyril Ramaphosa committed to give the people of South Africa a public holiday if the Springboks triumph at the Rugby World Cup in France, and now that the time to deliver has arrived, he has betrayed his own promises like the liar he is.
The 15th of December falls within a holiday period in South Africa, wherein a majority of labour intensive industries are already closed, schools are closed and many South Africans are home with their families.
To make matters worse, the 15th December falls before the 16th of December which deemed the Day of Reconcilliation in South Africa and is in actual fact an existing Public Holiday.
Ramaphosa has in a typical fashion tried to ride the wave of the Springboks victory and has now exposed himself as an opportunist who uses sporting moments to promote himself and the ANC, by placing themselves at the centre of a sporting victory with lies.”
The EFF urged South Africans to reject the President’s excuse of considering the matriculants who are writing exams, calling it just a pretentious act of consideration.
South Africans shared their disappointment at Ramaphosa’s decision to declare 15 December a public holiday as most were expecting a holiday this week to celebrate the Boks’ victory.
