At least 90 people have died as a result of the devastating floods that swept through the Eastern Cape last week, with authorities warning the figure may still rise.
The latest two fatalities were confirmed on Monday afternoon as search and rescue operations continue in affected areas.
According to the Department of Human Settlements, close to 3 000 households have been impacted. Over 1 000 homes or structures have been destroyed, and more than 600 have suffered partial damage. The department says these numbers are likely to change as assessments are ongoing.
Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane is expected to visit the province on Tuesday, 17 June, for a three-day oversight mission.
Her visit will include meetings with provincial and municipal leadership to evaluate ongoing relief efforts and discuss additional interventions for displaced residents.
“During disasters, the Department of Human Settlements can assist victims by providing temporary residential units, building materials, temporary emergency accommodation, and repairs,” the statement from the minister’s office read.
“Minister Simelane will be joined by the Eastern Cape Provincial and Local Government officials, including Mayors of the affected municipalities”.
