Another cash-in-transit (CIT) heist was foiled, 13 drug dealers were arrested and two kidnapped victims were rescued as police intensified their Easter weekend efforts.
This according to National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) General, Fannie Masemola, who says he is satisfied by the integrated and joint law enforcement operations across the country over the Easter weekend.
In Gauteng, police foiled another CIT heist on Saturday afternoon, along John Voster Road in Centurion.
A multidisciplinary team followed intelligence driven information when they intercepted the group of heavily armed suspects before they could pull off the heist.
Two gunmen were fatally wounded during a shootout which ensued between police. Three AK-47 automatic rifles were recovered.
Still in Gauteng, police cracked down on drug dealers in Eldorado Park and surrounding communities over the weekend.
Six drug dealers were arrested in Extension 4, Eldorado Park in the south of Johannesburg, where large quantities of crystal meth, tik, dagga and mandrax was seized.
Police say other drug dealers were arrested in raids across the country, bringing the number of drug dealers arrested up to 13.
High density operations are intensifying throughout the country through heightened police visibility with a focus on seizing illegal firearms, drugs and stolen motor vehicles.
In addition, the National Anti Kidnapping Task Team rescued two teenage boys after they were kidnapped in the South of Johannesburg. Three suspects have since been arrested.
Heightened visibility through roadblocks, patrols, search-and-seizure operations, disruptive operations and strategically deploying resources in all provinces contributed to the clamp down on crime.
General Masemola said, “We continue to urge our communities to continue to exercise discipline and restraint. We call on all people to continue to conduct themselves in an orderly manner, to abide by the rules of the road and not drink and drive.”
