Two people have been arrested in relation to the prison escape of ‘Facebook rapist’ Thabo Bester in May 2022.
On Monday, officials confirmed that they arrested two people, a 39-year-old former G4S employee, and a 65-year-old Port Edward man in KZN.
“The multi-disciplinary team investigating Bester’s escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre arrested the duo over the past weekend,” read a statement from the police.
“The former G4S employee was arrested at his residence in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 08 April 2023, while the 65-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 07 April 2023, at his home in Port Edward.”
Both suspects have been charged with ‘aiding and abetting a convicted prisoner to escape from lawful custody.’ They are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 11 April 2023.
Bester and his girlfriend Dr Nandipha were arrested in Tanzania on Saturday evening.
Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili and his team have arrived in Tanzia to engage with their Tanzanian counterparts to ‘finalize all legal proceedings required to bring Thabo Bester and his accomplice to justice in South Africa.’
