The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and Speaker have received the final report on the fire that destroyed the National Assembly building earlier this year, this is according to Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille.
The report estimates that it will cost over R 1 billion to rebuild the damaged parliament building.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille spoke to SABC and explained that there is an ongoing process to bring back the National Assembly to its former glory.
“It’s just over R 1.2 billion and that is the estimated cost by the Development Agency. So, once parliament decides to redesign the internal part of the National Assembly that will be considered what parliament wants to redesign the building,” said De Lille.
Zandile Mafe (49) is standing trial at the High Court in Cape Town for allegedly starting the fire that destroyed parts of both the Old Assembly wing and the National Assembly wing of Parliament in Cape Town in January.
