On Monday, 21 November, the DA Abroad staged a silent protest outside the South African High Commission in London, while President Ramaphosa met with King Charles III.
The opposition party doesn’t understand how the President went ahead with his State Visit whilst the country is in turmoil, with loadshedding crippling the economy.
Holding posters and a South African flag, members of the DA Abroad called out Ramaphosa for his stance on the Russian war against Ukraine, amongst other issues.
“We stand in solidarity with 74% of our fellow South Africans who believe that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine should be condemned. The DA is raising awareness and concerns around the ANC’s implicit support of the Ukraine war, which directly increases fuel and food prices in SA.”
In a statement DA Abroad leader, Gordon Mckay said: “As South Africa enters increased loadshedding yet again, President Ramaphosa is having tea with the King, whilst South Africans can’t even switch on a kettle.
President Ramaphosa should instead be in South Africa focusing on addressing these issues affecting vulnerable South Africans, as these issues will not be fixed by President Ramaphosa galivanting across the world.”
The DA Abroad says it will continue to mobilise South Africans abroad to advocate for a clean and stable government that can deliver a prosperous future for South Africa.
Ramaphosa was invited to Buckingham Palace for the first State Visit hosted by King Charles III.
A British military guard of honour received Ramaphosa when he landed at London Stansted airport in a South African Air Force plane.
The Presidency has indicated that trade, King Charles III’s vision for the Commonwealth, and climate change are anticipated to be on the agenda.
