The City of Joburg has proposed renaming De Beer Street in Braamfontein to Mthokozisi Ntumba Street.
This is in honour of Mthokozisi Ntumba, the South African civilian who was killed by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) during a Wits student protest in Braamfontein, Johannesburg on 10 March 2021.
He was 35 years old.
Ntumba was shot dead by police officers with rubber bullets while he was just leaving a doctor’s appointment.
It was confirmed that he was not part of the student protests nearby.
Concerns regarding police brutality and the use of excessive force were brought to light by the incident, which provoked considerable indignation and condemnation throughout South Africa.
Four SAPS officers were charged in the ensuing judicial processes in relation to Ntumba’s death.
However, they were later acquitted, which increased public annoyance and calls for police intervention.
