Global concern has arisen due to the outbreak of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. India is among the many nations keeping a careful eye on the virus and its spread.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), HMPV is a common respiratory virus that causes upper and lower respiratory illnesses (like a cold). It is a seasonal illness that often manifests in the winter and early spring much like the flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Human Metapneumovirus is not a recently identified virus.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that it was initially identified in the early 2000s.
The Ministry of Health in China reportedly stated that it is keeping a careful eye on the situation across the country via all possible means and asked the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide timely information on the situation.
In a news release on Friday, Mao Ning, the spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, stated :
“Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season”. The spokesperson said, “The diseases appear to be less severe and spread on a smaller scale compared with the previous year. I can assure you that the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners in China. It is safe to travel in China,” said Ning.
