Suspended Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane may soon find herself without a roof over head if she is unable to cover the monthly costs to her Pretoria home.
This after the Office of the Public Protector (PP) has terminated its lease agreement to Mkhwebane’s Bryntirion Estate home.
Should the suspended Public Protector wish to remain at the house, she will need to cover the R11 000 a month costs personally.
Until now, Mkhwebane’s rental costs were paid for by taxpayers, but the Office no longer finds its the public’s interests to cover the expense.
Mkhwebane moved into the upmarket estate in February 2017, claiming that her life was in danger
The Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) has confirmed that suspended Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane is not being evicted from the state house in Pretoria’s Bryntirion estate – but if she continues to live there she must do so at her own cost.
Mkhwebane’s stay at the estate has until now been at the taxpayers’ expense.
Apart from her rental expenses, the DA has raised concern over who is forking out the bill for Mkhwebane’s mounting legal bill.
According to the Office of the Public Protector this is being investigated and the matter has already been forwarded to the Auditor-General.
In relation to Mkhwebane’s monthly rental costs, the DA says it will write to SARS to request that the suspended PP pays the fringe benefits tax on the free accommodation she has enjoyed.
“The DA will write to SARS to request that they ensure she pays the fringe benefits tax on the free accommodation that she has enjoyed at the expense of hardworking South African households who are facing a daily battle to put enough food on the table.”
