Springboks specialist hooker, Bongi Mbonambi faces a tense wait until Thursday, 26 October to learn his fate regarding his alleged racial slur incident.
This after England flanker, Tom Curry accused the Bok player of hurling a racially discriminating insult at him, during the Springboks’ narrow semi-final win.
Curry, who approached referee Ben O’Keefe about Mbonambi allegedly calling him a “white c#nt” lodged a complaint with World Rugby who on Monday, 20 October said they would be investigating the incident.
“World Rugby takes allegations of discriminatory behaviour extremely seriously.
We can confirm that we are formally reviewing the allegation made by England’s Tom Curry in relation to the use of discriminatory language during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final on Saturday.
World Rugby will not be making further comment until the conclusion of the process.”
Bongi Mbonambi is currently attending all the Boks’ training sessions and will learn on Thursday if he will be playing in this Saturday’s final against New Zealand.
The Springboks will announce the lineup for the squad that will be taking on the All Blacks on Thursday, and World Rugby is expected to make a decision on Mbonambi shortly before that.
South Africa’s Minister for Sport, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa sent the Boks’ hooker a message of support, letting Mbonambi know that the entire country stands by him.
“Bongi Mbonambi is us. We support you Bongi, and the rest of the Springboks as you prepare for the World Cup final.
