Bheki Cele’s silence on AKA’s murder is a cause for concern, as his failure to address the spate of violent crimes in South Africa becomes more apparent.
The Police Minister’s neck is on the line after a crime expert recommended that Cele be fired with immediate effect following the gruesome shooting which claimed the lives of AKA and Tebello Motsoane.
Criminologist and former policeman Dr Hennie Lochner shared with the Citizen that Cele should have been fired a long time ago.
“It’s not only me who is feeling this way but many other South Africans. I mean you can’t make a teacher a minister of police, you won’t just allow any ordinary practitioner to operate on you if you have a heart problem.
You need to appoint he right people. Wearing a cowboy hat doesn’t make you a cowboy, and this man is not right for the job.”
Cele’s failure to offer a statement after CCTV footage revealed AKA was shot execution-style at close range on Friday, 10 February, while standing outside a restaurant on Florida Road, has been widely criticised.
South Africans expressed their outrage on social media at the level of lawlessness that is allowed to continue.
“Law and order are non-existent in this country. Every day women and children are dying. If they can shoot one of the biggest artists in South Africa like he was nothing, what hope does the average South African have?”

The irony is that the Police Minister spoke at the funeral of AKA’s late fiancée, Anele Tembe.
Cele echoed the sentiments of Anele’s father, Moses Tembe, remaining adamant that the 22-year old’s death was not due to suicide.
In December 2021, police wrapped up the investigation into Anele’s death and handed the matter over to the NPA under the premise it was a suicide investigation.
However, the evidence did suggest there were elements of suspicion with relation to murder.
Anele Tembe died in April 2021 after falling from the 10th floor of a Cape Town hotel, two months after being engaged to AKA.
