A group of unemployed youth from Soweto is marching to the offices of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero to demand work.
Residents feel Morero’s offer to hire foreign nationals as metro police officers demonstrates that there are open posts in the city. They left Thokoza Park in buses and headed to Braamfontein.
According to Stats SA The official unemployment rate in South Africa stands at 32,9 %, an increase of 0,8 of a percentage point in Q1:2024 compared to Q4:2023.
In Q1 of 2024, the labour force participation rate increased by 0,7 of a percentage point to 60,7%, while the absorption rate decreased by 0,1 of a percentage point to 40,7%.

Soweto’s youth are frustrated. They underlined that they had qualifications but are turned down when applying for work. This resident told Kaya News that their objective for today is to submit copies of their CV to the City of Johannesburg.
