Seven illegal immigrants have been arrested in Marlboro, Sandton for running a fake potato chip factory.
On Friday, 24 November the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) uncovered an unapproved potato chips manufacturer which was being run from a premises in Marlboro.
JMPD officers intercepted the illegal factory after stopping a white panel van at a routine stop and search at Zinna Drive, Marlboro.
Officers searched the van with two male occupants and found boxes in the vehicle.
Upon closer examination of the packages, officers discovered that the address on the packs of potato chips did not match that of the manufacturer.
The products also did not have the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) stamp of approval.
“Officers escorted the male occupants of the panel van to the manufacturer’s address in Marlboro.
Environmental Health inspectors were summoned to the scene and it was discovered that the owner doesn’t have a manufacturer certificate and the relevant documents to operate the business.
Home Affairs immigration was also called to the scene, and they verified that 7 employees at the business were illegal immigrants.
All 7 of the undocumented persons were detained at Bramley Police Station.”
The owner of the business is still at large.
