Gauteng police have arrested 5 suspects believed to be behind the recent Westbury murders, including a police officer.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday, 14 October and on Monday, 16 October in Sophiatown, Naturena and Soweto.
A joint operation by SAPS led to the arrests of the first two suspects at a block of flats on Du Plessis Street. Suspects were found in the possession of a large quantity of mandrax tablets and cocaine (rock) drugs.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the main suspect, who was wanted for the murder of a police officer, has a history of outstanding cases, including rape, contempt of court, and various other charges.
The second suspect is wanted for rape, and is currently facing a case related to possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Further tracing of suspects led police to make three other arrests in Naturena, Pimville, and Westbury.
All suspects will appear before respective Magistrates Courts in due course to face charges ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape and drug dealing.
Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, expressed satisfaction with the performance of police assigned to deal with lawlessness in Westbury and surrounding areas.
Mawela also commended the utilisation of the community-based intelligence from law abiding citizens who gave police vital information, which led to the successful arrests of all suspects.
