Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has revealed that a total of 225 people died on the country’s roads over the Easter weekend.
The Minister released the Easter weekend road fatalities statistics in Midrand, Johannesburg on Friday, 14 April.
According to Chikunga, there was an increase of 63 deaths this year, compared to the same period last year when 162 people died.
Of concern to the minister is the number of pedestrians who were killed from hit and runs.
“The high number of people who perished on our roads this Easter are pedestrians and I think it’s important to note this. Hit and runs accounted for 44.4% of road fatalities, followed by passengers at 27.7% and drivers at 25.6%.
So, our problem really is with the pedestrians, with the highest numbers of pedestrian deaths coming from the Western Cape, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng”
The Minister attributed the cause for most of the fatalities to human factors such as reckless and negligent driving, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Chikunga said the department recorded a total of 185 crashes which resulted in the 225 fatalities.
