The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety has revealed that 459 police officers are facing criminal charges.
The criminal cases range from reckless and negligent driving, common assault, and assault with intentions to cause grievous bodily harm.
Some Gauteng cops are also facing attempted murder, theft, house and business robbery, fraud, corruption, bribery, and domestic violence charges.
Faith Mazibuko revealed the information in a written response to questions put forward by the DA.
The MEC says Tsakane Police Station is one of the top three stations with the most offenders. Thirty-five police officers are currently under investigation for theft, assault common, and reckless and negligent driving.
“This is followed by the Krugersdorp police station with 28 police officers all charged with reckless and negligent driving,” Mazibuko says.
Benoni and Hekpoort police stations each have 15 police officers facing criminal charges.
“…the Benoni police station officers are under investigation for reckless and negligent driving, attempted murder, and theft. Hekpoort police officers are charged with common assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” says Mazibuko.

Overhaul of the SAPS needed
DA spokesperson on Community Safety, Michael Shackleton, says it is worrying that officers are failing to uphold the rule of law.
“Such acts have resulted in people losing the critical trust and confidence needed in law enforcement agencies and leaving residents more vulnerable. It is a clear indication that SAPS is failing in its responsibility to prevent, combat, and investigate crime,” he adds.
He has called on the government to conduct a complete overhaul of the SAPS.
“They need to curb corruption, hire people with a passion for policing and retain good police officers,” he says.
The DA is calling for an urgent intervention strategy in those top police stations severely affected to ensure that officers abide by the SAPS code of conduct.
