Former Malaika singer Tshedi Mholo and group member Bongani have been at loggerheads over who owns the intellectual rights to the group.
In an interview with MacG on Podcast and Chill, Tshedi revealed that in 2018, she received an email from Bongani claiming that he copyright. “Through some lawyer from Mooikloof ka word document,” she said.
She asked that their performances, her vocals, and everything else that she created be removed. “That girl must start from the beginning,” she said.
“We are in consultation with my legal team and there is a step that we are going to take and it is not going to end well.”
In 2021, Tshedi announced that she was parting ways with Malaka effective immediately after being part of the group since 2003.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure from the band,” she wrote in a statement.
“Effective immediately, I would like to inform you that I will not be doing any public performance or whatsoever under the banner of Malaika.”
“Being in the band took a toll on me on so many levels and I have reached a stage where I cannot carry the burden any further.”
