The head-on collision that claimed the lives of 17 people in Limpopo received a response from Minister Fikile Mbalula.
A bus driver and the passengers died after being trapped inside the bus after it caught alight upon impact.
The driver of the second vehicle also died on impact.
Mbalula conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased.
“As I convey my heartfelt condolences to these families, I do so with a heavy heart. Young lives pruned at the prime of their lives is a devastating loss to the country. I also wish a speedy recovery to those who survived and are recuperating,” the Minister said.
Mbalula stated that the Department of Transport makes every effort to ensure that South African roads are made safer.
This includes ensuring the roadworthiness of vehicles.
“This is the reality we are constantly confronted with as we put every measure feasible to make our roads safer. Such measures extend to ensuring that vehicles are in a good state of repair and that we conduct ourselves in a manner that saves life and limb on the road,” he said.
The minister stated that severe penalties will be passed on to those who violate the rules of the road with impunity.
