Economist Dr Duma Gqubule says there is a lot in the draft mining charter that makes it feel like a joke. Speaking to David O’Sullivan during Breakfast with David, Gqubule said the mining as it stands is a joke. He says he was one of those that spoke at the Mining Indaba and highlighted the need for an extension to public consultations on the draft mining charter
A two-day mining summit was held in Boksburg Ekurhuleni at the weekend.
Gqubule says mines want recognition for black empowerment deals that happened 20 years ago, which he thinks is absurd. He says the country needs to promote more community and worker participation in the mining sector to avoid another Marikana situation.
